The Trump administration has announced that what they refer to as "Antifa" is now a domestic terrorist organization. During the rise of fascism in the 1920s in Europe, roving groups of protesters, often anarchists and socialists, violently confronted fascist organizers in the streets. Some of these groups called themselves "Antifascist Action." They were associated by their ideology and were not part of a structured network. In response to the rise of fascist politics during Trump's first presidential term, Antifa protesters often attacked fascist events, and as a result were widely accused of attempting to silence free speech, by both Democrats and Republicans. Right wing conspiracy theories accuse Democratic politicians and philanthropists of financing Antifa, even though Antifa protesters have no representative, and no resources besides those that are organized for individual street protests. Critics say that the Trump administration intends to use the label to justify terrorism charges against any leftist group. Statistically, almost all political violence in the US is committed by right wingers.
