Dr. Brad Ruetenik joins Dean's Chat Host, Dr. Jeffrey Jensen, for a discussion on work/life balance. As a podiatric physician practicing in Encinitas, CA, Dr. Ruetenik pursues his passion for sailing and racing around the world. He has competed in the Trans-Pac race from Los Angeles to Hawaii four times, and has raced smaller (International 14') sailboats all over the world. 

Dr. Ruetenik pays it forward both in podiatric medicine as an attending with Scripps Memorial Hospital Residency Program in Encinitas, and in sailing as a mentor to upcoming sailors with dreams of competing on the world stage and the upcoming Olympics. As a Dean, Dr. Jensen is often asked about work/life balance by his students and prospective students and Dr. Ruetenik is a prime example of how one can find that balance and pursue excellence in multiple areas of life! Dr. Jensen frequently advises his current and prospective students on the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. He emphasizes that individuals have the freedom to choose the level of commitment they desire, whether it involves working long hours in an academic health center or having a part-time practice while pursuing other activities, such as daily surfing.

Dr. Ruetenik, a board-certified podiatrist by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, actively participates in the residency program at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas, California. In addition to his practice in Encinitas, he also collaborates with the orthopedics and podiatry department at Camp Pendleton. Despite his demanding work schedule, Dr. Ruetenik manages to find time to indulge in his passion for sailing and competes in sailboat races around the world.

This conversation with Dr. Ruetenik serves as further evidence that work-life balance is attainable in the field of podiatric medicine. He shares his unique journey to his current practice, including his two-year surgical residency at Camp Pendleton and his subsequent decision to continue working with the hospital.
