Episode 5: Michelle Martinko

In December 1979, 18 year old Michelle Martinko spent the evening doing some shopping at Westdale Mall in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She never came home. Her body was found in her car, riddled with stab wounds. Her family had a suspect in mind, but he had an alibi, and the case went cold. 39 years to the day after her murder, detectives arrested the man who killed Michelle. Even though he had worn gloves and had not sexually assaulted Michelle, he had left some of his DNA behind. This is one of the first cases in which a guilty verdict was handed down to a suspect who was identified using forensic genealogy
