Description

In recent episodes, we’ve talked about the importance of reading to babies and toddlers, covering pre-reading skills, early literacy development, and tips for engaging little ones. In this episode, we’re focusing on practical ways to encourage reading in daily routines for parents.

For starters, we should always approach caregivers with empathy and understanding. We must respect their existing routines and preferences while gently encouraging new practices. Remember the R E A C H method: Respect, Encourage, Ask, Consider, and be Honest. Involve parents in the planning process, valuing their input and cultural considerations.

When suggesting new activities, prioritize the family’s needs and preferences. Don’t overwhelm them; choose one or two strategies that align with their lifestyle and goals. Here are three simple ways to incorporate reading into everyday life:

  1. Keep books accessible: Store books in baskets, in the car, or in the child’s room for easy exploration.
  2. Utilize audiobooks and video stories: Play audiobooks in the background or watch storytelling videos on platforms like YouTube.
  3. Establish a daily reading routine: Aim to read or look at a book together at least once a day, whether during mealtime, bedtime, or bath time.

Implementing reading in daily routines encourages a love for books and language development.
