Description

Speech therapy for toddlers is different. It’s different than preschool speech and definitely different than school-based speech therapy services. Because of these differences, it’s time for a mindset shift.

In today’s episode, we will talk about shifting our viewpoint when it comes to speech therapy for toddlers. We will talk about toddler development and moving from thinking toddlers are “being bad” to identifying their communication skills and the why behind their behaviors.

We have to keep in mind that communication happens in a variety of ways: verbal speech, body language, devices (including personal devices), and beyond. With this population, our first objective for speech therapy should be improving their overall communication skills. Why? Because the number one concern of parents and caregivers is always the inability to communicate with the toddler.

When it comes to toddler evaluations, initially, we want to build their communication. We want to learn how they communicate and grow from those skills.

As a bonus, we are also chatting about 3 speech therapy goals I use when starting with speech therapy for toddlers!
