On today’s episode we are going to talk about colorectal cancer. About 1 in 10 patients with a new colon cancer diagnosis and 1 in 4 patients with a new rectal cancer diagnosis, are now younger than the age of 50. Because it's more common now in the younger population, and the screening has recently changed to start at age 45. For people under the age of 50, colorectal cancer deaths have surpassed lung cancer deaths, making it the leading cause of cancer deaths in men and second (after breast cancer) in women. It is the third leading cause of cancer related deaths in people of all ages in the United States. We discuss signs of colorectal cancer that should not be ignored, who should be screened for colon cancer, a variety of screening tests, risk factors for colon cancer, and different treatment options for colorectal cancer.
