Joining Jill and Doron on this episode, to tell us his story, is Emory University Professor Ray Schinazi (1964-68).

Raymond Schinazi is a Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Center for ViroScience and Cure at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.  Ray holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Bath in England.  He has authored over 600 peer-reviewed papers and 6 books, and holds over 100 issued US patents, which have resulted in 26 New Drug Applications (NDAs).  He is best known for his pioneering work on drugs for HIV, Hepatitis and COVID, and founded several successful drug development companies.  More than 94% of HIV patients in the US on combination therapy take at least one of the drugs he invented. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including – in 2018 - France’s highest civilian honor, the Légion D’honneur, for saving millions of lives globally.  He has also been awarded three honorary doctoral degrees. He attended Carmel College from 1964 to 1968, where he did his O and A levels and was on the School’s basketball team.

Hear Ray tell the inspiring story of how he came to Carmel as a 14 year-old Egyptian refugee (one of Carmel’s few Sephardic pupils at the time), reveal where in Carmel you could find crude oil, and name just a few of the 9 cities in which he now has a home.

Dedication: this episode, at Ray’s request, is dedicated to the memory of the late Dr. David Stamler, Headmaster of Carmel College from 1961 to 1971, who in December 2021 died in New York, aged 93.

Thank you, Ray, for turning us again to Carmel days!
