How much time do you spend alone?

It’s a question I have been asking myself over and over again. Well actually it’s a question everyone around me has been asking over and over again. It’s got to the point where I have become so self-conscious that I find myself justifying my alone time.

Loneliness carries a lot of stigma and shame and according to the World Health Organisation is a global health concern. Since time began humans were programmed to connect in order to survive, but I’m wondering if we have confused loneliness with alone time.

I no longer live in the city, work in one of the world's busiest newsrooms or live with someone else. By default I spend much more time on my own than I used to but for the most part I don’t feel lonely, which has made me curious to explore what constitutes loneliness and what is the difference between loneliness and solitude.

So If, like me you have found yourself conscious as to how much or how little time you spend alone, or if you are unsure as to what constitutes loneliness, then I hope my next two conversations will help you to reframe solitude as a way to rest, recharge and as an opportunity to hit the reset button.

For Part One, I am joined by Jade Angeles Fitton, a writer whose beautiful and deeply personal memoir 'Hermit', documents her escape from an abusive relationship into a life of intentional solitude where she healed, restored and embraced life alone.
