Hey Fam! Master Coach G 🌟 Thriving After 50 "Mind Body Soul" In today's episode... Let's talk menopause! The subject is has become front & center stage, that the federal government is funding 275 million toward research and education with an upcoming documentary called the M factor about menopause in 2025 Menopause is like being on a ride at an amusement park This is the part that happens like it or not... It involves a significant drop in hormone levels, particularly estrogen and progesterone, leading to symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, and sleep disturbances. Management options include lifestyle changes, hormone replacement therapy, and alternative treatments like herbal supplements and acupuncture. ### Key Stages of Menopause 1. **Perimenopause**: This transitional period can begin several years before menopause. During perimenopause, the ovaries gradually produce less estrogen, causing irregular menstrual cycles, changes in menstrual flow, and symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swings. This stage lasts until menopause. 2. **Menopause**: This is the point when a woman has not had a period for 12 consecutive months. The ovaries have stopped releasing eggs and producing most of their estrogen. 3. **Postmenopause**: This stage begins after menopause and lasts for the rest of a woman's life. Symptoms like hot flashes may ease for many women, but there can be long-term changes such as an increased risk for osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. ### Common Symptoms - **Hot Flashes**: Sudden feelings of warmth, often intense, especially in the upper body. - **Night Sweats**: Hot flashes that occur at night, causing sweating and sleep disturbances. - **Mood Changes**: Including mood swings, irritability, and an increased risk of depression. - **Sleep Problems**: Insomnia or difficulty staying asleep. - **Vaginal Dryness**: Leading to discomfort during sex. - **Weight Gain**: Changes in metabolism can lead to weight gain, especially around the abdomen. - **Thinning Hair and Dry Skin**: Reduced estrogen can affect hair and skin health. ### Health Risks Associated with Menopause - **Osteoporosis**: A decrease in estrogen can lead to a decrease in bone density, increasing the risk of fractures. - **Cardiovascular Disease**: The risk of heart disease rises after menopause due to changes in cholesterol levels and blood pressure. ### Management and Treatment Options - **Lifestyle Changes**: Regular exercise, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and stress management can help alleviate symptoms. - **Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)**: Medications containing female hormones can replace the ones the body no longer makes after menopause, helping to relieve hot flashes and prevent bone loss.
