Introduction

Modular construction has emerged as a revolutionary approach to addressing housing shortages, especially as the demand for rapid and affordable housing solutions intensifies. Unlike traditional construction, where the architect often leads and designs are tailored incrementally, modular projects are rooted in the principles of efficiency, standardization, and repeatability. This shift necessitates a design-driven approach, where a design manager leads an integrated design team — with architects as one of many critical contributors rather than the primary decision-makers. Here, we explore why a modular project must be design-driven, the advantages of having a design manager at the helm, and the impact this approach has on the entire construction process.
