Let's take a look at the very persuasive arguments for why free will is an illusion and in fact our whole lives and the entire universe are as determined as an elaborate wind-up clock. Then let us look at the even more persuasive (I think) case for why free will is in fact real. The key is in realising that both are true: most of our actions are determined, but we are able to take certain steps of mind and body which increasingly release us to genuine choice.
