The Holocaust produced not only vast tragedy but also extraordinary instances of moral courage, moments when individuals defied bureaucracy, prejudice, and even their own governments to save human lives. Among the most remarkable of these figures was Chiune Sugihara, a Japanese diplomat stationed in Lithuania during the early years of the Second World War. At great personal risk, Sugihara issued thousands of transit visas to Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution, enabling them to escape Europe through the Soviet Union and Japan.
