For centuries, European cartographers filled the blank southern hemisphere with the imagined continent of Terra Australis Incognita, a vast land they believed balanced the Earth. Explorers from Magellan to Cook sought its mysterious shores, convinced it held wealth and wonder. When Australia was finally mapped, the mythical land vanished, but its name lived on in the continent that replaced it.
