Born in Fife, Les Millie — known as "Laser" — began skating at five and came through the Kirkcaldy juniors before making his Fife Flyers senior debut at just 14. After four seasons with a talented Flyers side, limited opportunities for British players prompted a move south.
A curfew-related suspension under Brian Kanewischer opened the door to Sheffield, and at 19 Les joined the Sheffield Steelers with support from Ronnie Wood and former teammate Neil Abel. He quickly became a fan favourite, forming a lethal line with Tim Cranston and Tommy Plommer.
Across three hugely successful seasons, Les enjoyed two promotions, a League Championship and a Playoff Championship. A career highlight came in the 1994–95 Wembley Playoff semi-final, scoring a hat-trick (including a penalty shot) against the Cardiff Devils.
After roster changes limited his ice time, Les returned to the Fife Flyers, scoring 23 goals in 28 games, before a prolific spell with the Solihull Blaze (90 goals in 74 games). Now retired, Les lives in Sheffield, working as a branch manager in the vehicle components industry.
