The House voted yesterday to strike down three Biden land use plans that obstructed natural resource extraction in Montana, Alaska and North Dakota, using the Congressional Review Act, which allows Congress to overturn recent administration actions. While the Republican majority was able to secure the votes, all voting Democrats opposed the measures, with one Republican joining them— Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania. It's now up to the Senate to join the House in order to formally strike the Biden era rules.

Top coal company Peabody said yesterday in an investor presentation that it expects US demand for electricity may boost coal consumption as much as 57%. The company expects utilities to ramp up output from coal plants that are running well below capacity and, by boosting usage to "historic capacity factors," it could lead to more than 250 million tons of additional annual demand in the coming years.

And the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis looks at how growing international demand is causing natural gas prices to rise, which will in turn push U.S. electricity prices higher. The U.S. Energy Information Administration expects one hedge against those high gas prices will be to shift more generation back to less expensive coal.
