Exploring New Beginnings of Continued Education with Adrian Portmann - VHSBB (Volkshochschule Beider Basel)

This autumn, Neighborhood News had the pleasure of touring the newly opened Vochhochschule Beider Basel (VHSBB), a center for adult education serving both Basel City and Basel Land. Spearheading this institution is Adrian Portmann, a dedicated director who has been with VHSBB for over 11 years. Our visit began with a firsthand tour by Adrian, showcasing the new facilities and discussing the rich history and future of adult education in the region.

The new facility for VHSBB is conveniently situated amidst the vibrant city life, yet it offers a serene oasis for learning. The facility boasts a welcoming reception area, a cozy tea and coffee room, and five versatile classrooms. Additionally, a beautiful garden shared with neighboring psychotherapists provides a tranquil outdoor learning environment, perfectly suited for various classes, from Qigong to Spanish.

At VHSBB, the community's engagement is paramount. During our conversation, Adrian highlights the institution's dedication to inclusivity, particularly its aim to broaden participation among individuals with a migration background. As the world advances with online learning and artificial intelligence, VHSBB remains a staunch advocate for in-person interactions.

The diverse curriculum at VHSBB is punctuated with unique courses such as "Understanding the World," which delves into international politics with insights from foreign correspondents. Other innovative offerings include outdoor group walks that combine nature with learning and a non-structural, yet artistic, yodeling course. For those curious about VHSBB, the recent open house provided an excellent opportunity to explore its offerings. Although the open house has passed, visitors are always welcome during opening hours to learn more about VHSBB's exciting programs.
