Think of last time you visited a primary care doctor and the reasons why you made that trip to his or her office - perhaps it was to do with a sore throat that only worsened or a pain in your body that grew or maybe something else. Whatever the reason may have been, the bottom line is that when we often go to the doctor to “fix a problem.” But what if instead of our relationship’s foundation with our doctor being set upon fixing a problem, it was set upon preventing one before it begins? As a leading plant-based physician and internist, this is the paradigm that Dr. Mauricio Gonzales challenges us to ask into question.
Having grown up in Mexico and being the son of a Hematologist Pediatrician, Dr. Mauricio Gonzales decided at age 18 that the world of nutrition beckoned him. During his studies in nutrition, he realized his greater potential and decided to continue his education and practice to become a doctor. These two worlds collided during his time as a medical student and Mauricio, stunned by how little attention is granted to nutrition along with the irrefutable evidence behind a plant based diet, immediately knew that his destiny stood before him as food as medicine. Now, as an Internal Medicine resident at Metropolitan Hospital/New York Medical College, Dr. Gonzalez is positively changing the lives of his patients as well as generously devoting his time to giving fascinating lectures and seminars on the benefits of a pant based diet, by distilling the science down to digestible bite sized pieces.
Dr. Mauricio Gonzales also founded the first plant-based medical immersion program in Mexico, which brings together diverse audiences to learn about the health benefits of a plant based diet. As Mauricio says, it’s all about making small changes, and it starts with breakfast. He believes it is his responsibility to take the knowledge he has gathered, reach widely and share it with audiences of assorted cultures. In essence, he maintains a practical and relatable approach to food as medicine, which he conveys in a positive and encouraging format no matter where one is on his/her health journey.
