Did you know that roughly 10% of the US population has tried to go plant based at some point of their lives? Crazy right!? You probably also guessed that most of these people didn’t stick to their plant based diet, when remembering that only 2% are currently following a plant based lifestyle.
Clearly drop-off rates are high. It’s tough to stay vegan because of a combination of reasons: the feeling of not being on top of your health and social pressure are often the main ones. And we get it. We know exactly how these challenges feel and how change can be daunting and overwhelming at times.
A few weeks ago the vegan YouTube world blew up when a vegan YouTube celebrity, who has built a business on her raw vegan cooking and lifestyle videos, declared she was no longer vegan. What we find tough about this, is not the fact that she is changing her diet or dropping veganism. What’s tough about it, is that extreme eating patterns like raw only, low fat high carb, low carb high fat and the list of restrictive eating habits goes on and on, gets thrown into the same bucket as a whole-food plant based diet.
Eating whole, plant-based foods is the opposite of restriction, it’s abundance. It’s not about cutting out or focusing on isolated macro nutrients (fat, carbs, protein) but rather about eating food (all sorts of plants: starchy veggies, green veggies, nuts, seeds, beans, grains, fruit, mushrooms etc) in its most minimally processed state to benefit from the complex and rich nutrition profiles of all of these plants.
And guess what? It’s totally ok if you can’t do it ‘perfectly’ or 100% all the time. There are many reasons why we chose to eat plants only. And we don’t believe that it’s about pushing this mindset on another but rather about sharing why it works for us and how we overcame hurdles. Want to know more?
