In 1961, a young graduate named Michael Rockelfeller decided to leave a life of luxury and travel to New Guinea, which was, at the time, one of the most remote, unpopulated areas of the planet. It’s only known inhabitants were those who were far disconnected from modern society, and lived as though they were stuck in the Stone Age. Michael Rockelfeller traveled to New Guinea in hopes of collecting artifacts from these individuals to bring back home for his father to display in a museum. The tribe Michael Rockelfeller was interested in inhabited an area of about 10,000 square miles of jungle and swamp, and were known for making wooden sculptures that had been coated in the blood of their enemies.

Because Michael Rockelfeller was white, he was relatively safe when traveling to the area. According to history, these individuals were only ever hostile toward black visitors, as they perceived them to be from neighboring tribes and believed they might be hostile. Because of this, Michael Rockelfeller was able to spend upwards of 6 months living among one of these tribes, writing about their way of life.

In November of 1961, Michael Rockelfeller was traveling up the coast of the region when his small sailboat capsized. He was traveling alongside a companion when he decided to strap two jerry cans to himself and swim toward shore in hopes of finding help. Michael Rockelfeller's companion was found the following day, but Michael was never seen or heard from again. An incredible search for Michael began, though no trace of him was ever found. It was assumed that he had tired out and drowned while swimming to shore. However, rumors began to circulate that he had somehow managed to make it to shore. In fact, rumors within local tribes began to circulate, claiming that a white man washed along shore, but was killed by natives.

However, other rumors seemed to suggest that a white man had been living secretly among a group of tribesman as a prisoner that the natives treated like a god. This story seemed to hold a small amount of validity to it, as a photo emerged in 1968 of an unknown white man living among one of the local tribes. The photo has never been confirmed as showing evidence of Michael Rockelfeller's survival, however it certainly does show a white man living among the tribesmen.

Those who were close to Michael Rockelfeller have accepted the fact that he drowned at sea, or that he was eaten by cannibals. However, this bit of evidence seems to suggest that this isn’t the case. So is it possible that, after all this time, Michael Rockelfeller could still be alive in a remote area of New Guinea?
