Show notes:
Title: Stop, Drop, & Roll
Summary: The average attention span of a young person is 12 to 28 minutes. When you find your athletes are not grasping a concept, use the Stop, Drop and Roll technique to improve learning and retention.
Other: Winning coaches don’t build successful programs without great practice plans. Go to www.Basketballpracticeplans.com for print-ready plans for K-8 graders.
Steve is giving me the keys to the recording studio again - I guess this means I don’t suck. Thanks for all your wonderful feedback and 5-star ratings.
I’m your guest host today, Coach Bill Flitter - of the Coaching Youth Hoops Podcast and Basketballpracticeplans.com
I am back to talk about practice planning and being efficient with your time.
Raise your hand right now if you used 30 minutes to teach something that you allowed for 10 minutes on our practice plan! I know i have.
The kids were not getting the concept, so I just kept talking, teaching, training. And blaming the kids for not ‘getting it’. Everyone in the gym leaves frustrated!
No matter how carefully your practice is planned, something may still go wrong.
Next time this happens - because it will do this instead. Stop, Drop and Roll. Because you are on fire and your blood is boiling at this point!
Stop: Take a breadth and remind yourself they are kids. Assume you are at fault. Evaluate how you are teaching it.
Drop: If you allotted time for a drill, stick to the time as close to that as possible for that practice. Drop it!
Role: Move onto the next part of practice.
On the car ride home, evaluate how you taught the drill.
What could you do better?
Did you break it down into a bite-side digestible enough piece?
Do the kids have lot of homework and test that is occupying their brain?
Tomorrow is a new day. Make some changes to the way you teach and tackle it again the next day.
Big shout out to all the coaches who are providing amazing feedback on my basketball practice plans.
