Summary: Dramatically boost practice efficiency just by looking at this one area. Too many coaches waste valuable practice time and actually hinder player learning with this bad habit. Learn how to keep athletes mentally engaged.

Other: Keeping athletes engaged starts with well-thought-out practices. Head on over to Basketballpracticeplans.com for a science-based approach to practice. Each plan is mobile-friendly and print-ready.

I had a player tell me once, you know one thing that frustrates us - when coaches stop scrimmages to correct our play.

I can see that.

How often are you Pausing practice to deliver Feedback? And how long are you talking?

If you don’t know the answer, record a practice. I was embarrassed when I did.

I am hyper-focused on improving this season. Talk less, play more!

My guess you tool could dramatically boost practice efficiency just by looking at this one area. Too many stoppages are long and drawn out, which waste valuable practice
time and cause athletes to mentally disengage.

During our off-season, I am testng doing short sprints 3-5 minutes focused drills, let them play, take notes and correct them at the end of the 3-5 minutes drill.

Or I approach individuals and provide feedback.

This technique gives the players an opportunity to critique and adjust themselves. Which is much better than me yelling at them all the time.

However, stopping a drill to correct players is inevitable. Do you have a Practice Pause Routine?

Creating Practice pause Routine is a consistent way that you pause and resume practice.

Develop a routine for how you will pause practice, get everyone’s full attention,
then resume play again in a timely manner. Here’s an example...

“FREEZE!” - Get full Attention -

Deliver Feedback -

Say “Play”

To deliver helpful group feedback, I came up with a framework called F.I.T.

It stands for Fast, Information, and Timely.

Fast = When you make a stoppage to deliver feedback, set a shot clock - think 30 seconds or
less, then get them playing again.

Informative = When you do pause to deliver feedback, provide one piece of
information for athletes to focus on when they resume playing.

Timely = When play resumes after the feedback, provide live feedback on the
one thing you just asked athletes to focus on.

Pausing too often and too long makes practice less efficient. Kids check out.

Hope you found that helpful!
