When Ryan Day arrived at Ohio State in January of 2017 as the Buckeyes' co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, he was overshadowed by the hiring of offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Kevin Wilson. Almost everyone -- certainly including us here at Bucknuts -- thought Wilson was the one who was going to bring the offense to new heights in Columbus. After all, it was Wilson who was relatively successful as the head coach at Indiana (and always fielded good/great offenses at IU) and it was Wilson who had a history of being a standout offensive coordinator at the college level at Oklahoma and Northwestern.
Yet, in the span of one year, it was Day who was turning down an opportunity to be an offensive coordinator in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans. It was Day who was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2018. And it was Day who became just the second assistant coach ever at Ohio State to make a salary in the seven-digits (joining Greg Schiano).
Then when Urban Meyer was suspended, it was Day who took over the program during preseason camp and for the first three games of the 2018 season. Then when Meyer retired after the 2018 season, Ohio State was so impressed with Day that they didn't even do a search for a new head coach. The Buckeyes promoted Day to head coach, and the early returns on the recruiting front and just how he handles his business in general have been positive.
On today's show, Jonah Booker joins Dave Biddle to discuss the quick rise of Ryan Day, plus:
* How Justin Fields and Matthew Baldwin look so far at quarterback.
* Thoughts on OSU's 2019 wide receivers.
* Ohio State's basketball team defeating Indiana on Thursday and advancing to face Michigan State today in the Big Ten Tournament.
All of that and more is coming at you on the Friday extravaganza.
