What can be expected from Ohio State's defense in 2023? The Buckeyes improved from 59th to 14th in the country in total defense during Jim Knowles' first season as coordinator in 2022. However, OSU's defense cost the team dearly in consecutive losses to close out the season against Michigan and Georgia.
In addition to it being his first year in Columbus, Knowles inherited a lack of veteran talent on the defense. We know this because only one player was drafted off the Buckeyes' 2022 defense ... and that was third-round pick Zach Harrison. That was it.
This season should be different in a good way for Ohio State. Not only is it the second year of the Knowles' system, but the most talented players on the defense appear ready to come of age. There are a lot of third-year and second-year players who are extremely talented on the defensive side of the ball.
Let's take a close look at all three levels of the Buckeyes' defense in 2023 and what reasonable expectations are for this group. That is coming your way on the Monday 5ish as Dave Biddle flies solo.
