Hi there! Brett here. Here's what we did on Monday, July 31st, 2017:
00:00 - When is an "offensive" license plate not actually offensive? A Winnipeg man had his Star Trek themed license plate revoked by Manitoba Public Insurance because it is offensive to Indigenous people. It reads ASIMIL8, or, assimilate. It's based on the BORG alien race. We're joined by John Carpay, president of the the Justice Centre of Constitutional Freedoms, an organization that hopes to take MPI to court over this
28:22 - Chicago Cubs giving infamous fan Steve Bartman a World Series ring // I had a GREAT customer service experience on Saturday at a large Canadian retailer that sells Tires. The staff went way above and beyond for me, and I appreciate it. ESPECIALLY after the bad experience I had a few months back.
37:33 - I was the MC at a wedding on Saturday. One of the out-of-town guests came in from Larna, BULGARIA! Her name is Anita Popova. She told us some of her story on Saturday, that she's from Germany, has been studying in Bulgaria, and eventually wants to move here. When she was 15, she spent a year in Winnipeg as part of an exchange program, and has fallen in love with our city and country. I invited her to join me and Greg on our show, so, she did!
55:50 - Los Angeles could be getting the 2028 Olympics. Is it time to ditch the 'one city per Olympics' approach?
67:02 - YouTube has unveiled "Spotlight Canada", a curated page highlighting some of our country's standout videos -- Nicole Bell is with Communications & Public Affairs for YouTube in Canada
74:29 - Listener needs help in remembering an old substitute teacher of hers, a teacher who was a Holocaust survivor
79:32 - Nickelback ticket giveaway, then more on the substitute teacher
86:27 - Painted In Light debrief! Recap of Saturday night Ghost Sign event in the Exchange District, with urban archaeologist Matt Cohen
96:21 - Julie Buckingham tees up THE NEWS, with guest host Hal Anderson!
