आसामच्या सिंगफो जमातीमध्ये चहाच्या पानांचा काढा पिण्याची रीत होती. आसामच्या राजाचा दिवाण असलेल्या मणिराम दिवाणने ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनीच्या अधिकाऱ्यांना घेऊन सिंगफो जमातीच्या गावांना भेटी दिल्या. तो काढा चहाच्या पानांचा आहे असा निर्वाळा तज्ज्ञांनी दिला. भारतीय चहाचा शोध असा लागला.
Manram Dewan, the secretary of the state of Assam, took an interest in discovering Tea. There was a tradition of consuming the juice of the leaves of a particular plant in the Singpho tribe. Maniram along with the officials of the East India Company visited the tribal villages and established that those plants were nothing but Tea.
