युरोपात बटाटा हे पशुखाद्य समजलं जात असे. अनेक युरोपिय देशात बटाटे खाण्यावर बंदीच होती. बटाटा हे फळ नाही तर जमिनीखाली वाढणारं खोड आहे, हे अनेक वर्षं युरोपला ठाऊकच नव्हतं.बटाटे कच्चे खायचे नसतात तर उकडून, सोलून खायचे असतात हे सुध्दा त्यांना माहित नव्हतं.
Potatoes were considered animal feed in Europe for several years. There was a ban on eating potatoes in many European countries. Europe was unaware that potato is not a fruit and it should not be consumed raw.
