यमुना सूर्यदेव की पुत्री तथा यम और वैवस्वत मनु की बहन हैं।
जब अपनी सौतेली माता छाया के श्राप के बाद यम को मृत्युलोक का संरक्षक बनकर जाना पड़ा तब देवी यमी, पृथ्वीलोक पर यमुना नदी के रूप में अवतरित हुईं। इसीलिए माना जाता है कि यमुना में स्नान करने से यम के प्रकोप से मुक्ति मिलती है।
ऐसी मान्यता है की भाई दूज के दिन यम अपनी बहन को मिलने आते हैं, इसीलिए भाई दूज का एक और नाम यम द्वितीया भी है।
Yamuna
Yamuna was daughter of Suryadev and sister of Yama and Vaivaswat Manu.
When Yama was cursed by his step-mother Chhaya and had to eventually go to rule the Mrityuloka, Yamuna came to earth and became the river Yamuna that we know today. That is why it is said that bathing in Yamuna relieves from the fear of Yama.
It is believed that on the day of Bhai Duj, Yama visits his sister; that is why it is also celebrated as Yama Dwitiya.
