He has been one among the most highly successful & respected veteran actors in the history of Indian cinema. He was also one among the highest paid actors of his time. He played hero roles from 1940 to 1947, negative character from 1942 to 1991, and played supporting and character roles from 1967 to 2007. Some of his fameous movies are Madhumati, Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai, Upkar, Shaheed, Purab Aur Paschim, Ram Aur Shyam, Aansoo Ban Gaye Phool, Johny Mera Naam, Victoria No. 203, BeImaan , Zanjeer, Majboor, Don, Amar Akbar Anthony and Duniya. He was awarded with Padma Bhushan in 2002 and Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 2013. He died on 12 July 2013 at the age of 93.
