Description

In a battle of respect and money, a determined Lamar Jackson faces off against the NFL's salary cap and money-saving strategies as he fights for a fair contract with the Baltimore Ravens.
I learned about the NFL's wage scale and the importance of rookie contracts on the Michael Nance Audio Experience podcast. The episode discussed the Lamar Jackson franchise tag issue and whether Leo Messi would come to the MLS. It was highlighted that eight of fourteen quarterbacks on rookie contracts made the playoffs, compared to six of eighteen on non-rookie contracts. David Beckham's 2007 contract with the LA Galaxy showed why the deal for Messi in 2020 was so sweet. However, Messi's lack of English and age could be a barrier, and it could also lead to the narrative that the MLS is a retirement league. Ultimately, it was argued that Messi alone wouldn't be enough to make Inter Miami championship favorites.
"No quarterback coming out in the draft, nor any quarterback that's available in free agency, can do what Lamar can do - it's time to pay up and show the respect he deserves!"

In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. How has the Lamar Jackson franchise tag issue set a new precedent for NFL quarterbacks?
2. Could Lionel Messi's transfer to the MLS be a game-changing move for the league?
3. What is the significance of the "rookie deal" for professional athletes, and how does it relate to respect and salary?

The Baltimore Ravens placed the nonexclusive franchise tag on Lamar Jackson. Teams are looking to capitalize on young QB talent while they're still on their rookie deal. Rookie contracts offer the best opportunity for teams to invest their dollars in other areas.

Messi's arrival in the MLS would be the biggest thing to happen to the entire league since its creation. Messi, by his own admission, does not speak English. If the reports are true, Messi will be 36 when he makes his Inter Miami debut.
