Description

Tonight's show on Radio Free Brooklyn features a live set by The Bullseyes. Hailing from the small Polish town of Leszno, The Bullseyes are a living testament to the global language of rock music. The duo, made up of Darek on guitar and Matt on drums, is rapidly gaining fans around the world with a style that draws equally from vintage indie and futuristic production. The result is an urgent sound that speaks directly to the experience of the modern world.

After we feature their live set I'm going to ask you a very simple question - "Would you go see The Bullseyes play live if they cam to your town?" As far as I'm concerned there's only one acceptable response - "Phuque ya!"

The playlist for this show didn't start out as an anti-Adam Levine playlist, all playlists are created with an eye to further highlight the music of our featured artist, but it kinda turned into one when I saw an article about how the Maroon 5 frontman infamously said “I feel like there aren’t any bands any more … I feel like they’re a dying breed.” (Read the Guardian article "Why bands are disappearing: "Young people aren't excited by them")

Well, I'm here to tell Adam, and many others, that I'm VERY excited about a lot of music being created by female-fronted bands, by bands that include female and non-binary members, and by bands that reflect the different voices in our community. (Not to take anything away from "groups of lads with guitars" because if I've featured a band's song on a show that means I'm excited by it.) The problem, as I see it, is that the program directors and music directors at radio stations and labels have been taken over by bean counters and people who lack imagination.

Thankfully at Radio Free Brooklyn we don't have to worry about that and so I've put together a playlist of music by artists, primarily duos, who genuinely excite me and who I would love to see play live, if I haven't done so already. So put your dancing shoes on and get ready to hear some fun music by SIRSY, ARXX, A Shadow of Jaguar, venray, Cadaver Dogs, Broozer, The Velveteers, Even Twice, Bad Hoo, and a stunning set by The Bullseyes.

The Rodent Hour is an homage to the friends that I made during my misspent youth, those lifelong friends who joined me on those weekend nights so many years ago and whose eclectic tastes still influence the selection of artists and music that is featured on the show.

When not dealing with the restrictions of Covid-19 The Rodent Hour features interviews with independent musicians along with a curated playlist of music from Brooklyn and beyond the borough. I've conducted interviews with over 240 unique artists from places such as Detroit (MI), Durham (NC), Nashville (TN), Scranton (PA), Philadelphia (PA), Atlanta (GA), Denver (CO), Petersburg (IN), Portland (OR), London (UK), Pamplona (ES), Toronto (ON), Halifax (NS), Stockholm (SE), Dublin, (IE), Glasgow (SCT), Perth (AU) and, of course, New York City.
