Description

In this episode, Jeannette talks to Anna McKay who went from being a globally recognised intellectual property lawyer to developing and launching the Zeez Sleep Pebble and Sleep Pad with Steve Walpole. These unobtrusive under the pillow devices use brainwave patterns to promote good sleep, right through the night.

Anna explains why she stepped away from the highly enjoyable but stressful work she was doing to develop this sleep product. From childhood, she has been a chronic insomniac. So, she knows from personal experience that their device works. She explains what the product is and how it works. As well as sharing her entrepreneurial journey and some of the lessons she and Steve have learned while launching and developing their product. They also discuss the approach Anna and Steve are planning to use to take the next step.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

The Zeez devices work by prompting the brain of the user to copy the neural patterns of a sound sleeper.
Before using the device, only 38% of testers fell asleep within 15 minutes. After using the Zeez Sleep Pebble, that rose to 81%.
70% of testers woke during the night at least 3 times a week. While using the device only 35% did so.
For the device to work fully users need to practice good sleep hygiene. For example, darkening the room properly.
In the podcast, Ana goes through several good sleep hygiene habits. Explaining the science behind why they work and are necessary.
Sunshine is an important component of sleep hygiene. It plays a role in triggering serotonin.
What you eat at breakfast has an impact on whether you can stay asleep. Why that is explained in the podcast.
Parents often have to wake for their children. But the quality of their sleep can still be greatly improved.
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.
Don´t inadvertently put barriers in your way when developing a product. It is not a perfect process.
Be authentic.

BEST MOMENTS
‘(Our device) is quantitively different from other (sleep) devices that work on the brain. ´
‘Our lifestyle has taken us away from the natural pattern of daylight.’
‘I was good at relaxing, but I couldn’t sleep.’

ABOUT THE GUEST
Born in London, brought up in Zimbabwe and rural Nottinghamshire, Anna became a globally recognized intellectual property lawyer, litigating big cases involving medicines and science, usually against big multinationals. She was a chronic insomniac. Five hours of sleep was exceptional, and Anna often didn't sleep for several nights in a row. Acupuncture, massage, Shiatsu, and other therapies helped her to cope, but made little impact on her sleep. She loved her work – it was interesting, demanding, and very high energy: and that kept her awake, however, it was a dangerous lifestyle.
One day, a minor workplace irritation made her realise that she didn't want to be a partner in a law firm any longer. She began to work with inventors and gained more control over her life. This change enabled her to address her sleep differently. It became a mission.

Eventually, she set up Zeez Sleep with electronics engineer Steve Walpole. Steve and her measured brainwaves, tested and learnt how to encourage our brains to sleep well. They developed, patented, and now sell the Zeez Sleep Pebble. An under the pillow device which mimics the brain activities of relaxation and deep sleep to prompt poor sleepers to adopt a pattern of good sleep. It is a ground-breaking device, with the potential to change the way we sleep and transform lives. The kind of corporate culture in which she worked as a young lawyer, with all-night meetings fuelled by coffee and relaxation predicated on alcohol is unsatisfying and unproductive, but understandable if it seems as if there is no other way. Supporting good sleep is a way to get back balance and change our culture.
