Description

In this episode, Jeannette talks to Mike Batcup who is a designer, architect, and the director of Batcup Architecture. He provides an insight into the role an architect plays in helping clients to create new buildings or transform existing ones. Including providing an overview of the main pitfalls involved in this process. Mike shares advice about managing the planning process, budgeting, dealing with the party wall act and several other subjects.
He and Jeannette also discuss why investing in property is still worth considering. Including talking about the current state of the UK housing market and what is likely to happen in the near future.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
Architects guide their clients so that they end up with the building they wanted.
The more you tell an architect about what you want to achieve the better the result will be.
You need to be flexible when building or reforming a property.
Cost analysis and planning are critical. Always slightly overestimate the costs.
Never try to shortcut the planning process. Doing so always turns out badly, in the end.
The party wall act is there to resolve disputes between neighbours and protects both parties when work needs to be done.
The act requires you to notify neighbours of work, but they cannot stop you from doing it.
If you invest in property. Over the long term, you will normally make a profit.
At some point, the UK property market is likely to slow.
In London, the value is not in the bricks and mortar, it is in the land.
It is not unusual for people in London to buy property, and then knock it down.
Be careful about what you get involved in. Pause regularly and review what you are doing.

BEST MOMENTS
‘Part of our job is to show the client that they can actually achieve more than perhaps they were thinking of. ´
‘Do it properly. Do not try to cut corners.’
‘Your future will be what you make it.’
