Description

On this episode Ariel is joined by Emily McPhetridge, a banker who is here to educate us on the power of money and expand our understanding of how to relate to it in an empowered way.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Your credit score is how banks and credit unions see your dependability – can you make your payments on time? Are you up to date on your loans? This affects your ability to purchase a home, get a credit card, getting a loan, a phone, etc. Credit is so important throughout your life and the foundation of being an adult.
Something that’s intimidating to moist people but most banks offer is financial planners. Their job is to look at your full financial picture so they can help set you up for success, plan you life, saving for a vacation/home, plan your retirement.
The number one mistake I’ve seen people make in my time as a banker is credit cards; the amount of debt that people can get into through credit cards, especially when you’re young. I’m guilty, I did it before I got into banking, and I learned my lesson. Credit cards are there for emergencies and for 30% usage or under. Getting into debt, especially with store cards, can get you into so much trouble and hurt your credit score, which will take a lot of time and commitment to repair.
Most of my clients are female small business owners and I admire them because they do everything. It’s really important to surround yourself with people you admire, especially being a female working in corporate America.
BEST MOMENTS
“Keep your credit card usage to under 30%, if you do your credit score will increase.”
“When spending, don’t go outside your budget. Just because you’ve been given a high credit limit it doesn’t mean you can afford to max out that limit.”
“When you’re starting out, learn how to manage your money and how to save. Open a checking account and a savings account. Use apps to learn to budget your money.”
“It’s never too late to learn new financial behaviours.”
