Description

On this episode Ariel is joined by psychotherapist and business coach Jennifer Kennett to talk about the power of business boundaries, including how to set boundaries and the cost of not having them.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
The easiest way to think of business boundaries is they are all the ways you want to set expectations with potential clients and clients in order for you to be able to show up as your best self. It covers a lot of areas including time, money, how you want clients to contact you, how you want to take them through the business process, how many days and hours a week you are going to work.
Business partnerships are one of the most complex relationships out there, they’re like a marriage without any of the emotional connection or willingness to give each other the benefit of the doubt.
I often ask new therapists (but it applies to anybody) what they need to do for their lives to be sustainable. Most say between $60-70,000 a year. That’s not unreasonable. Then I ask is that revenue or take home, and if it’s take home, is that before or after taxes? And their eyes go wide. But you need to know that because your price for potential clients is going to be dependent upon how much you want to make and what you need to make.
When you honour a business boundary with yourself your mental health will get better because it removes the resentment that builds up – which is a really good indicator that someone’s not holding healthy business boundaries

BEST MOMENTS
“So many entrepreneurs walk into the business space without thinking about what are the boundaries that I need to set in my life, with my clients, with my employees and contractors in order for me to turn up as my best self.”
“You should plan to spend an hour of administrative work for every hour of client-based work. Especially in your first couple of years because you’re setting up your systems.”
“If replying to voicemails takes up too much of your time, simply record a voicemail saying you don’t reply to voicemails and the easiest way to reach me is email or text.”
“In most industries money boundaries are the biggest ones because it feeds into our sense of worth, we’re told how much you make is equivalent to how valuable you are. Which is not true.”
