On this episode Ariel is joined by cybersecurity expert Laura LeDoux. Cybersecurity is major issue, currently 2million Washingtonians are exposed to potential identity theft, and if you don’t know what RFID wallets are, API keys, two-factor authentication or the ‘the bank statement rule’, you definitely need to listen to this episode.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
The first part of regulation of privacy setting is self-regulation, a lot of users don’t understand the tools they have at their own fingertips to enhance their own privacy and security. What I like to do is help users of phones/apps/websites to access something electronically where you might transmit your data.
If you have a home-based business, make sure you’re not using your home address for things like your licencing, professional associations, etc because that comes to your home and if your mail is stolen of something becomes compromised, people now know that you have a business out of your home.
Multi-factor authentication is a very protective way that many service providers use to ensure that you are in fact you. It can be annoying for users, but that few extra seconds you’re waiting for a verification email or text is so worth it. It means that if someone has your computer and are trying to hack into your accounts, but you have your phone, you’ll get a ping on your phone to alert you that someone’s trying to sign in. You can then take protective measures with whichever service provider it is.
The bank statement rule is a law that says if you don’t check your bank account statement on a regular basis (once every 60 days, possibly) you’re liable for any unauthorised activity. Keep an eye on your accounts and be the first line of defence to anyone using your account without you authorisation. The quicker you discover it, the quicker you can mitigate damages and prevent things from going further.
BEST MOMENTS
“Turn off location setting in your phone – only when using an app. Apps track your location if you allow them to. Turn off location settings on your photos.”
“Have separate accounts for business and personal and make sure it’s locked down so no one you don’t know can see your personal account.”
“Browse in ‘incognito mode’ to protect your privacy, don’t give you r personal information just for personal information purposes, like for coupons and ebooks, etc.”
“The less places that have your personal information, when we have these data breaches, the less likely you are to be compromised.”
