On this episode, Ariel is joined by Taryn Laakso, who helps people unlock their potential by helping them transform their perspective. They look at how our perspective creates incredible positive results in our lives.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
I help my clients with a ‘Five I plan’. We investigate what’s working, what’s not working and what they want, I help them intercept the negative thought patterns that are holding them back, then we go into inspire; what do they want, how do they want to impact the world in which they live and where they see themselves in 5-10 years and at the end of their life, looking back. Then we initiate those plans and take bold actions to get them out of their comfort zones
My mind Jedi tactics to get people out of a perspective that isn’t serving us, that’s surrounded in negative emotions: doubt, fear, blame, shame, guilt. The perspective shift can be as simple as taking time to breathe, centre the nervous system and even rubbing our fingertips together and focussing on feeling the ridges there for a minute or two throughout the day, our nervous system calms down and you can start shifting.
There’s one brain that’s split into left and right, but then there’s our ‘body brain’, when people say they have a gut feeling about something, our gut is a brain, it’s full of information, like when you get chills about something. If we can start learning to trust it and that wisdom, we’ll get a chance to explore it.
One of my clients is the leader of a non-profit, she went through my 8-week mental fitness bootcamp and because she was able to identify the saboteur, inner-critic thoughts… She wanted to go after a grant for her company, and the inner-critic voice was poo-pooing it. She identified that and thought ‘what’s possible if I go after this?’ She went after it and got several hundred thousand dollars and went from being able to serve 75 kids to 3000 kids that are struggling in school.
BEST MOMENTS
“I get a lot of resistance when I ask people to go into their body, especially from high performing corporate types.”
“We’re always at choice of how we see something.”
“The wisdom that we tap into is what I call ‘sage wisdom’, it provides a different perspective rather than sitting in negative emotions.”
“Being curious we can be willing to explore other possibilities and perspectives, it’s open not closed off and shut down.”
ABOUT THE GUEST
Taryn Laakso is a leadership & mental fitness coach who guides clients through a journey of overcoming limiting beliefs, igniting confidence, and inspiring leadership.
Taryn left the corporate world on March 5th, 2020, unknowingly days before the world came to a halt with Covid-19. She left behind a 20+ year career in HR and Technology to fully pursue a career that ignited her passion and would create a living that inspired rather than tired her out.
She understands the human dynamics that are called forth when encountering difficult choices during transitions like career changes, relationships, and parenting. This understanding allows her to hold compassion, wisdom, and empathy for others facing similar challenges. Taryn recognizes that corporate professionals and parents face similar challenges at the office and at home; especially when transitioning into a new phase of leadership, parenting, or relationships. Often they are faced with negative self-talk like “Am I good enough?” or “Am I doing enough?”. These particular negative self-talk tapes increase in volume significantly when facing a major transition. Taryn believes that no one should go alone on the journey of transformation without a guide to keep an eye out for the crevasses of negative inner talk that open up wide to sabotage your happiness and confidence.
