In this episode, Ariel talks about the power of fun and how and why fun is essential, especially in times of high stress and how it can add a lot of value to your life as an adult.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
I’ve found a lot of ways to have fun in a lot of really unusual environments and situations. Through the successes that I’ve experienced as a result of having fun, I realised something really important, which is we all need something to look forward to and we all need fun in our lives.
During the pandemic we’ve been deprived of fun for years and our cognitive load has consumed us with home-schooling, working from home in crowded spaces, dealing with financial stress and trying not to lose our minds. We are fun deficient and we need to correct this state as soon as possible.
Adult play is a time to forget about work and commitments and to be social in an unstructured, creative way. Fun can add joy to life. It reduces stress, it superchargers learning and it connects you to others and the world around you. Play and fun can make work more productive and pleasurable.
Make a list of fun things you like to do, start with things you can do in a short time frame (2-3 hours) so you can’t say no to yourself, that you don’t have enough time. This could be dancing, doing the crossword, art, private time with people you care about or to a festival/concert. Mid-level goals where you need to plan or schedule, like a party with friends or you need to travel, what kind of short trips have you imagined doing or have put off. One of the things we’ve learned during the pandemic is that life’s too short. Find a way to make that trip/class/event happen. Then there are the crazy goals, somewhere that’s expensive or needs a lot of planning ahead and saving. Put it on your calendar for a years’ time and start saving and planning towards it.
BEST MOMENTS
“The inner child needs fun to enjoy life, to feel inspired, be creative and solve problems.”
“The inner child, I’ve discovered, is the gatekeeper of lifeforce energy in the body. If people’s inner child is not happy they have low energy, they feel depressed, they’re not creative, they’re not good at problem solving and they’re not fun to be around.”
“Fun helps us gain a new perspective, get new ideas, connect with other parts of our psyche besides just the part of us that does work and fulfils commitments, duties and obligations. It makes life feel worth living again sometimes and makes us better to be around.”
“When you know you’re going to do something fun it lightens up your whole mindset, your thoughts and feelings. A lot of the hard stuff you’re dealing with now feels easier, lighter and freer when you have something to look forward to.”
