In this episode, Ariel talks about the power of lowering stress where she gives tips and ideas about how not to overdo it in life.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Imagine pulling a wagon with heavy stones in it all day long. If you clear the stones out of it it’s easier to pull. The cognitive load is everything we think about, feel, learn, process, and have to remember and deal with on a daily basis. The mind and brain can only process so much information consciously, so a lot of it becomes subconscious. We’re constantly being bombarded in the modern age with the internet as well as life stuff, most of us already have too much cognitive load before the pandemic.
Look at your schedule, are you over-scheduled? Do you need to take breaks or get out for a walk? Do you have too many financial commitments? Are there too many people counting on you emotionally? Is there anything you can cut or reduce in your life? You can delegate housework by buying one of those robots that vacuum and mops, or hire a cleaner, that’s one less thing on your list.
One of the unsung heroes in managing depression and anxiety is exercise 3-5 days a week. It has so many different benefits mentally and physically, it helps you clear emotional distress, you can take out your anger while exercising too, it boosts immune function and keeps you young and your joints lubricated.
Saying ‘no’ politely yet firmly is another way to decrease cognitive load, so set those boundaries and keep them. If somebody wants something you can’t give or you need to keep space in your calendar just for you to have time for yourself, do it. Most of us have been taught to please people, but we end up overrunning our own boundaries and we send negative messages to ourselves that we don’t deserve our own time, space, feelings, opinions or needs. It’s really important that you set boundaries and take time to take care of yourself. (Make sure to check out episode 11 on relationship boundaries and episode 24 on business boundaries.)
