On this episode, Ariel discusses how the body communicates to us and how much we really need to listen. Ariel shares her experiences from thousands of clients and how they learned to heal by listening and taking action.
Research:
Tiffany Field: Field is best known for her research on the effectiveness of massage therapy for stimulating growth in preterm infants. In one of her studies, premature infants received tactile/kinesthetic stimulation, consisting of body stroking and passive movements of the limbs, 3 times per day for 15 minutes over a 10-day period. These infants showed greater weight gain, were more active and alert, and were discharged from the hospital on average of six days earlier than a control group of premature infants who were not massaged. Listening to Your Body Tips:
Here are some ideas for you:
Idea #1: When you are just waking up, ask your body, "How are you feeling today?" and, "What do you need to feel your best?" Take a moment to breathe deeply, and notice what insights you have. Maybe a part of your body will twitch, you will get a feeling you need to exercise. Follow through on listening by giving yourself some touch. Massage that tissue or touch your own skin. What is your body telling you? How does it feel when you listen to the request?
Idea #2: When you are working, you may feel a need to rest, or take a bio or stretch break! Do it!
Idea #3: If you are in an environment, and you can feel your body cringing--leave! Maybe it is too noisy, or there is an odor you dislike--if your body does not like something, the feeling of dislike is a signal for protection. This also applies to food. If you feel like you want to "get away" from something, there could be toxins, molds, or some other potentially hazardous component in the space or in the food.
Idea #4: Get more sleep! If you can, go to bed 30-60 minutes earlier than usual. Most people are chronically sleep-deprived and do not even know it!
Idea #5: Drink more water! Most of us are also chronically dehydrated. Sip your water, don't gulp it! And drink half your body weigh in ounces.
Idea #6: If you feel like you need to get outside, go do it! Ignore the complaining in your mind about the weather--just make it happen! You will be happy you did!
Idea #7: Eat when you are hungry, and STOP EATING when you are not hungry! We have hunger and satiety reflexes for a reason--you know when you feel "empty" and "full," and when you eat according to these reflexes, you will be more in balance with yourself!
Idea #8: Use the restroom when you need to! Chronic ignoring of bio needs can lead to health issues--so use the restroom when your body tells you to!
Idea #9: Listen to what your body wants to eat! There are a million diets out there, but one powerful way to get and stay in balance is to listen to what your body wants to eat--and I don’t mean sugar cravings--if you listen or get quiet, your body will tell you when it wants protein, carbs, fats and sometimes, yes, treats (which is when it is ready to process them).
The incredible thing about listening to your body are the rewards. Once your body knows you are listening, amazing, or even miraculous changes can occur. I have had many clients tell me their pain completely went away, just by listening and following through on what their body was asking them to do!
When your body knows that you are listening to what it is telling you, you will get more and more messages--and this feedback look of listening and following through will bring more harmony and peace into your life!
KEY TAKEAWAYS
I daily see the effects of what happens when people do and do not listen to their bodies, it’s quite profound. There are many structures to help you feel and be aware of what’s happening inside your body – this is called interoception – and outside of your body - exteroception. Awareness of position and balancing is proprioception.
How many times have you been travelling, or looking after family/children and ignored your own bio-needs? Or you didn’t say what you needed to say in order to keep the peace? All those scenarios get stored in your subconscious and sometimes even in your cells and they need to come out to be processed.
BEST MOMENTS
"We get out sense of balance from ‘otoliths’, ‘brain and’ or ‘brain rocks’ that are tiny calcifications in our heads suspended by hairs."
"I’m always looking at the body, heart, mind and spirit connection and asking, 'What’s going on in your life?'"
"All people need to be touched. Getting a regular massage is so good for your health."
