Paul is joined again by Noha Hefny to talk about unsung heroes, what the term means to her and what makes an unsung hero.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
For me they are ordinary people who perhaps lack visibility, exposure, they are everyday heroes that undertake gestures and acts of kindness, generosity, impact and they inspire others to make a difference – not through big actions, but through everyday acts of kindness and generosity. They are the people who really step up during the hardest times that we face in our societies and they take the accountability and responsibility to address issues head on without really expecting any recognition.
We haven’t done a good enough job yet to recognise these efforts that are really aligned with human values and are the core essence of what it means to be human and humanity.
Women by nature have a nurturing nature, they feel responsible to take care of those around them. I think there are many unsung heroes who are women, for example, during the pandemic the number of nurses and teachers – the majority of which are women – these are people who selflessly worked night and day to make sure that education and health systems were not disrupted, risking their own health, wellbeing and safety for the wellbeing of others. These are definitely unsung heroes. To be fair to the men as well, there are many unsung heroes like the ones who dedicate their lives to a humanitarian career, working in conflict zones to take care of refugees or people who are struggling, these are unsung heroes as well.
We need everyone to deliver what they can in order to really make a difference, at the end of the day every small action or act of kindness matters.
BEST MOMENTS
‘These are selfless people who dedicate their lives every day to making a difference and impacting their communities positively, however they lack the exposure, visibility and even the interest in that. It’s a genuine authentic act that they do with zero expectations except goodwill, doing good and impacting societies and communities in a positive way.’
‘You’re not living in isolation in the world, you have responsibility and you’re accountable for things that, without even being asked, you want to address. Most of these unsung heroes are tackling big issues as well through every day small actions, which sometimes grow into something much bigger.’
‘To be an unsung hero you have to have courage. In the world we’re living in today women are facing inequalities, so for them to make a difference and undertake these selfless acts to help communities and the world takes a lot of courage and much more challenges and struggles than men would have to face.’
‘An unsung hero is a reference that should be giving by others, I’d feel a bit arrogant saying I was an unsung hero!’
