In today's episode of the Mastering The Life Podcast, your host Paul Lowe interviews Dr. Shan Hussain, author of the best-selling book, The Big Prescription: Balancing the Three Principles of Enduring Health. Today's topic is the foundation of health. A lot can be learned today as Paul and Dr. Shan discuss the importance of physical, emotional, and spiritual health.
They dig deeper into the three areas of wellbeing that we have an influence on. How do we focus on those three areas of our lives? We can control them. We can do something about them. The other areas that we don't have control over, let them go. There are other factors related to human's wellbeing, for example, coaching. Coaching is important nowadays. Somebody just needs to remind us of what to do to achieve our health goals in life.
Paul and Dr. Shan also talk about stress. How do we reduce stress? Is stress affecting all three areas of your life? If yes, how do you go about it? Listen now to the valuable insights and advice from Dr. Shan.
KEY TAKEAWAYSThe three areas as defined by the WHO that we have an influence on:
Physical well-beingMental well-beingSocial well-being
The aim behind what Dr. Shan tried to write in the book is to give people simple, practical, easy advice and simple changes that they can implement into their lives to naturally improve their health without the need of doctors, nurses, or medication.
We are becoming increasingly distracted from the lifestyle elements of many diseases that have now become increasingly prevalent in today's society. It's a good reminder particularly for practising clinicians to have amongst them that lifestyle problems also require lifestyle solutions. And it's becoming increasingly obvious that we can't out medicate our way out of unhealthy lifestyle choices.
What we're all seeking is we just want to be happy. We want to find a way to be happy. But unfortunately, we kind of create a lot of rules around what happiness needs to look like. ‘I'll be happy if I manage to do this or achieve that or get this or any set amount of money or be in a relationship with this person.' Sometimes, we can set up those kinds of rules and make it a very difficult game to play in terms of seeking happiness.
Paul's HOW Model: - Health - Others - Wealth
It's not about having a great health; it is about what we can do with great health. What we can achieve as a result of great health. Anything we want to do in life, we can do better or faster, more productively, more efficiently if we have our health at optimal levels, and we are also in a stronger position to enjoy and reap the benefits of what we do and what we achieve.
We are trying to take people away from illness and into health. But coaching is more about taking people that are actually quite well and quite stable and quite accountable, but they want more. They want to have optimal health and energy and well-being and vitality. That's where coaching comes in. People still need support around areas of health through coaching whilst not actually being acutely unwell.
The purpose of the coach is to help you get from where you are to where you want to be and recognizing that actually where you are is okay if that's where you want to be, but where do you want to be?
Our physical bodies, our minds, and our environments, our interaction with our environment; each of these three areas are fluid. They're constantly changing. The physical body is constantly regenerating itself. Old cells are dying. New cells are replacing them. Same with our emotional well-being and our mental health, it's constantly changing. It's fluid. We have new thoughts that are rising all the time. And these could all potentially lead to emotions, and behaviours and outcomes and then, our social environments are constantly changing.
One of the greatest silent epidemics of modern times is stress. People around the world are stressed.
A mindful practice is basically something that when you do, you are completely immersed in doing. You are not thinking about anything else. You are not worrying about the past, you are not stressing about things in the future. You're totally present in that moment. One example is meditation.
So every day we've got to do something to help release that stress. Something healthy and it's got to be releasing the stress. It's not about escaping from it with a glass of wine or a cigarette or whatever might be. It's about actually what we can to do that actively release it.
Emotional detachment can be very powerful. We have the tendency to surrender our emotional well-being to events that are totally outside our control. It's important to have that detachment. Just remember what we can actually do what we are in control of doing and just detach ourselves from the things that we can't control. Let it go.
Most people are only about two or three steps away from the level of health they're seeking. No more than 5 steps. It's about finding those steps.
BEST MOMENTS"We've all got the ability to adapt to or adjust or alter the perception that we have or the interactions that we have within our environment to help support our physical, and mental, and social well-being."
"The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest patients in taking care of the human frame in diet and in the cause and prevention of human disease."
"A good way to look at happiness is by determining how much progress we making day to day, week to week and year on year in terms of where we are and where we want to want to be and how well we're improving and meeting those areas."
"We've got to work in collaboration together with our patients, with our clients to create solutions and ensure they're implemented and give support where necessary and also give accountability."
"I think the point that I would make was, it's not so much what's happening around you, it's how you were responding to it, how you're internalizing it, and what you decide to how you decide to define it. And then ultimately, what you are going to do from there with."
"It's incredible. And that there are so many other different pieces of evidence that we can put together from various research papers to support how powerful such breathing exercises can be. So whenever you remember, just 5 to 10 very deep breathes and particularly if you have a lot of anxiety or worry or stress, do it all the time, any time you can remember and just see how much better you feel, see how much confident you feel."
"The discovery that peace, love and happiness are ever present within our own being and completely available at every moment of experience under all conditions is the most important discovery anyone can make."

ABOUT THE HOST
Something that’s never been attached to Paul is the label ‘normal’ – for which he is immensely proud. He definitely subscribes to being one of those mentioned – in the Steve Jobs quote:
“Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
