Description

On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Rebecca Wheele is joined by Collins Mureithi to talk about his programmes called Young Leaders which aims to develop Africans to be servant-leaders who will become agents of positive change in their communities.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
One of the gaps I identified was that there were a lot of gaps in communities, especially in Africa. We find we have common problems, such as not using certain resources to the fullest. I asked myself: How can I make it better? That’s when I decided to start this programme with the aim of raising and creating awareness of why it’s important for us to have good leadership and the definition of good servant-leadership.
Through the program, people are able to learn about leadership skills, how you brand yourself as a leader, to understand how to position yourself in the community and support the community in making them have a good life.
Servant-leadership is the answer to a lot of problems globally, not just in Africa. As a leader I’m responsible for helping people around the world to make their lives better, supporting them, leaving them in a better place, sharing humanity through love. I have been able to do it by starting the organisation, using what little resources that we have been able to get to support and empower other people. When people understand why they need to practice servant-leadership it will be easy for us to work on these problems we are all going through.
We have a number of discussions we have with government about accountability. We know that in every government there is a system with budgets for things like health and hunger. We give a platform for conversations with those leaders on accountability in these areas, we really want to understand how they’re using the resources that they have been given from the people via taxes. It’s not easy for people to be accountable when they aren’t doing the right things, so it’s a tug-of-war – a process – that isn’t 100% bearing fruit, but at least 30% we have kept them accountable and making them see how they are taking responsibilities and keeping the promises of the actions they said they would do while they are in office.
BEST MOMENTS
‘I’ve gone through the process of becoming a servant-leader and I’ve seen the benefit.’‘It is your responsibility as a leader to be able to improve the lives of other people positively. You don’t have to take advantage of other people because of your position.’‘Servant-leadership is about using what we have for the betterment of people that are going through challenges and issues.’‘It’s not about “what am I getting?” It’s about “what am I giving to my people?”’

ABOUT THE GUESTS
After realizing a gap of lack of opportunities among young people in his community, Collins Mureithi registered a community based youth led organisation to create a safe space that allows them to discuss how to advocate for their rights, opportunities & mobilize for resources to apply programs.
This space has raised young people to be servant leaders who will become agents of positive change in the community through volunteerism & service to humanity. His mission in life is to train young people to serve the world by first giving out their purpose before they think about themselves over what they will receive. He has managed to train over 100 grass-root youth & women organisational founders on the basic management system and help them fundraise locally.
