On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined by returning guest Collins Mureithi to talk about inspiring stories from Africa, as Collins has been privileged to interact with people who are creating amazing impact in their communities throughout the continent as well as his home country of Kenya.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
One of the things that really encourages and inspires me every day is when I meet people who are doing good in the community, who are trying their best to leave a legacy whereby others will be able to smile. I’ve been able to get the opportunity to mingle and interact with other people who are really making an amazing impact in their communities.
One lady called Grace, in the South of Kenya, is doing peace programmes bringing young girls together and trains them on the importance of maintaining peace. She really inspires me because she’s just 23 years old and has an organisation that trains other young girls to become peace ambassadors. When I look at such kinds of people I’m able to see that this is the right place that I’m supposed to be.
There’s a Muslim lady called Leila who lives on the coastal part of Kenya who is really engaged in building women in leadership. She’s a young leader, she’s really focussing on building her marginalised community. In Kenya Muslim ladies get a lot of opposition, they cannot talk where men are, they cannot go to the mosque and mingle with other women, they cannot hold certain positions. So, Leila is a force of change even though she’s having a lot of opposition from her community.
Evans Odepo is passionate about volunteerism. He drives me crazy when he talks about volunteerism because he’ll talk about it from morning to evening. He tells me that one of the things that really brought him into the limelight and offered him an opportunity is volunteerism. He says volunteerism is the bridge to opportunities, but people think volunteerism is a waste of time, but it brings us opportunities, it helps us to really serve our purpose in life. Evans is a passionate volunteer who is also building young people in entrepreneurship and leadership in Nairobi, Kenya.
BEST MOMENTS
‘I’m addicted to positive impact. I love when people are happy, I love when people are able to get hold of resources that will help them, I love when people succeed in life and I want to put myself in a crowd that really thinks the same.’
‘We are partners with the UN and one of the pillars that we follow is SDGs. Right now SDGs are the main focus as an organisation and as a person, these are things that really guide us to be able to contribute to more impact in our communities.’‘The word “relationship” is very powerful. I love stories and relationships have made me who I am because there are different forms of relationships and I love to talk about healthy relationships. When you apply and understand the art of healthy relationships, it really helps you build you as a person and it brings the community to be healthy.’
‘A lot of people in Africa have had an upbringing whereby you think of others before you think of yourself. You want to make sure everybody is safe and comfortable but you don’t focus on yourself. But, if you don’t think of yourself you will not be able to have a healthy relationship. You attract who you are, if you don’t love yourself how can you love others?’
