Description

On this episode guest host Bob Conlin presents another of his relationship episodes, this time he has a guest, Rubria Mendoza, for the second of a two-part episode on cultural relationships. For example, how an intercultural relationship can impact our children.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
In our family, coming from different backgrounds and cultures, it’s been interesting the way we’ve raised our children. It’s taken a lot of communication, tons of patience for my husband and I. We had a little bit of an advantage in that before we had our kids we spoke a lot about when we had kids and we said we’d have an agreement and that we’d stick to it. It’s really helped us.
Now that we have our kids – two girls aged 6 and 8 – how do we raise them? It was interesting in the first years, coming from different cultures and especially the experiences I had as a kid in Mexico, I’ve passed things on to them that my American husband doesn’t understand and vice versa. For example, we don’t talk to kids about certain things till they get to a certain age, but in the US they do. My husband was explaining how a car works in technical detail and I wondered why he was overwhelming her with information, but he says they need to be engaged and pushed, but I said ‘no’, they shouldn’t be pushed, they are kids and don’t need to be pushed like that yet.
Having children has definitely expanded my husband’s and my opportunities to learn from each other. Our communication has improved because we have two little ones that are following us and we have different cultures to be proud of.
BEST MOMENTS
‘We agreed 12 years ago that one thing we’d do is to let our kids fail to help them learn. We’d be there to make sure they’d always have a safe spot here with us to come back to and show that failing is part of life and how they can get strong from that.’
‘There’s a way that I was brought up that I think is correct, but there is a different way that works too, and it’s fine.’
‘We both wanted our kids to be raised to have both languages, English and Spanish. We’re fortunate that at school they combine the 64 languages from all the backgrounds of the children studying there. Now they want to learn all the languages and about the cultures, which is expanding their knowledge and empathy, which we encourage.’
