Description

Paul is joined by Ravi Nair to talk about belief, why it’s so important and how it’s such an influential aspect of our lives.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
When we believe in something we start talking about it and that leads into action. For example, I pray every day and I go to the Hindu temple occasionally. Whatever you do on a daily basis becomes a habit, if you wish well for everybody that becomes a habit for you. Your habits start to become your values and your values start becoming your destiny. Beliefs are so important because they have a direct impact on your destiny.
It’s hard to give up beliefs, even if we know they are self-limiting. Your beliefs are often connected to your identity, so if you let go of that belief it will impact your identity. If someone is rude or aggressive, but his behaviour has helped get him ahead in life, to become a boss, if his mind somewhere he believes this behaviour brings him success and the position he’s attained in life. If someone were to say “I don’t think you should be so rude to people” he will feel that if he gives up that behaviour he will lose a part of his identity that makes him successful.
Once you’re aware that you only have access to limited information around which you’ve built a belief, you’ll start to look for more information and you won’t get stuck to that belief. Perhaps you’ll even find that that belief was wrong. Your belief had a direct impact on your emotions, and your emotions put you into motion, so if you end up getting any self-limiting belief the emotion linked to that is negative and will stop you making positive motion.
The good news is you can recognise a self-limiting belief just from the words you choose. “I do/I don’t” is a belief in how we define our capability. “I do believe that I will be rich” talks to that person’s belief in regards to their capability to be rich. Another person might say “I don’t think I can make this relationship work” . This is a classic example of a person talking about their inability to make a relationship work. Both these statements define the person’s belief in regards to their capability. Always watch out for the words “I do/I don’t”. “I can’t” is about self-image, it’s seeing yourself as not having will power. “I should/I shouldn’t” statements after these words are limiting-beliefs arising from shame and judgement or obligation. “I am/I am not” statements are beliefs about themselves personally. “But”: This word is so powerful that even if you have a positive belief the word ‘but’ creates doubt and makes it a negative belief. You can change your belief by playing around with the sentences.
BEST MOMENTS
‘You can create your destiny depending on the beliefs you have.’
‘If you have a thought again and again and again, it will become a belief for you. Beliefs manifest at the conscious and subconscious level, so sometimes we’re not even aware of them.’
‘There is always a hidden fear under every belief. For example, the belief that you’re good at one-to-one communication comes from a fear of public speaking.’
‘When you use the right words, you can change your beliefs.’
