In today’s episode, Colin shares with you insights gleaned from delegates at the British Aggregates Association AGM event he attended! There were speakers from the institute of quarrying, Health & Safety Executive, Energy efficiency processes, Environmental providers and more!
At the event, Colin attended a talk given by Ed-Leicester Tigers player Rory Underwood, who gave a talk on leadership skills, interaction and teamwork. Aside from being star-struck, Colin took away lots of important knowledge but specifically wanted to share the following;
“The difference between ‘focus’ and ‘awareness’. At times where you’re 100% focused, then you’re not really aware of what is going on around you; If you are 100% aware, then you’re not focussing on things that are significant or really important.”
Colin describes how Rory made him realise the necessity of ‘flip-flopping’ between both focus and awareness and the importance of balancing the two.
Rory also spoke quite a bit about how he had previously flown fighter jets. Flying a fighter jet, at speed, low altitude and also around other planes and obstacles must be an intense challenge to juggle focus and awareness; to be focussed on direction and speed, whilst also being aware of what is all around you and the complicated controls and procedures involved with flying a fighter jet!
Colin brings you back to the Event he attended; He recommends attending events like this not only for the speakers and talks, but also for the networking with other individuals in, or related to, your field!
At this years even Colin had a stand and got talking to quite a few delegates. Colin leveraged their opinion and recorded a few clips for you; The podcast listeners!
Colin notes the trend of people all talking about participation; Getting out into the workplace, getting involved and spending time with people; Looking at how jobs are completed. Risk assessments are essential and Colin feels this highlights this point!
