Todd Conklin is the host of one of the world’s most popular podcasts centred around Health & Safety - The Pre-Accident Investigation Podcast - and through his tireless efforts in promoting the cause, he has been called to speak and mentor around the globe.
Todd joins Colin to discuss the world of health and safety, how it’s changed now that COVID-19 has taken its toll, and what the sector will look like going forward.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
The current crisis comes in three sections: disease, economic and psychological. It is highly likely that working life will change forever in its wake.
Too many in the health and safety industry are tackling the challenges the wrong way round. We need to concentrate more on the higher echelons of business, which will cause a ripple effect downwards.
Despite views to the contrary, workers at ground level are very good at keeping themselves safe, and are constantly trying to be safer.
Rules shouldn’t be things we penalise people for breaking. Rules should be the jumping off point for studying practices that need improvement.
In life in general, we do not consider the element of risk. We are driven by the absence of controls. In the workplace we are far too interested in what not to do, instead of how we can do things better.
BEST MOMENTS
‘Workers aren’t the problem. Workers are the solution’
‘We created efficiencies. We’re going back to workplace that’s going to be built on resilience’
’The most important tool we have is generosity’
’Nobody comes to work wanting to have an accident'
