Description

This week on The Steven Sulley study, we have our first ever professional Tennis player on the podcast; Davis Cup champion James Ward! We talk about James’ career, what prompted him to get into Tennis and how his business is dealing with corona virus.
We also talk about the mindset of an athlete and how transformative this can be for many, not just those in sport.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
James started playing Tennis at a young age. He played football at the same time but then made a conscious decision to go down the tennis route.
James admits that the last couple of years of his education did suffer somewhat because of his Tennis playing. He left at 16 and moved to a Tennis academy in Spain and fully focused on his career.
Recovery for athletes is pivotal. James says there are many different things that work for people and to focus on what you personally find works rather than doing things for the ‘sake’ of it.
James and Steven believe that if you do the right things they come back to you. In a sense like a ‘law of attraction’.
It is very important to portray yourself in the right way on social media. Some sports people actually end up making more of a career of being in the public eye than in sports!
After suffering set-backs it would have been so easy for James to turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms. He says it's the support he has around him and the morals he was brought up with that makes him pick himself up and have the right attitude to keep moving forward.

BEST MOMENTS

“You need to focus on something at that young age or you get left behind really quickly”

“The biggest challenge is not letting it go to their head”

“You’re giving yourself the best possible chance to get back to the level you were and hopefully even better”

“A lot of kids are basing their appearance, their achievements on what is actually a fake life”

ABOUT THE HOST

The Steven Sulley Study is my take on success. My view is you should have multiple focuses to be a well-rounded individual. Success shouldn't be just one thing like money, for example, it should also consist of a healthy fit lifestyle and thriving relationships.

As a person who has made a success in life and also made huge cock-ups I feel I can offer suggestions and tips on how to become successful or at least start your pursuit. My 'Study' has taken resources from reading and education plus being around, my perception, of successful people and I, know a lot of successful people from all walks of life.

My 'Study' coming from my experiences in business, investing, sales (my core background), training, boxing and education has enabled me to become well rounded and successful and I will help you in these key areas too.
