Key Takeaways
What is mentorship? Mentorship is when a more knowledgeable and experienced person guides and helps a less experienced person. Mentors help you to accelerate your growth. You will learn a lot quicker with a mentor, compared with doing something on your own.
How to find a mentor? Networking events can be a useful way to meet people and find a mentor. People don’t have to advertise their services as a mentor, it could just be someone who is more successful than you, you can build a relationship with them which could develop a natural mentor relationship. Personal recommendations can be key, as well as testimonials. Social media can also be a great way to find mentors.
Benefits of mentoring. Increased accountability – once you’ve set tasks, having someone checking your work and progress makes you accountable for that process. Reliability is key, if they aren’t reliable then it won’t be a good investment. They can increase your network through their own. Having a mentor can help you think of the future and be ahead of the game all the time.
The four C’s that every mentor should have:
Congruency: Does your mentor do what they say do? Some people can talk the talk but not walk the walk. You should do your due diligence on everyone you approach to be your mentor to ensure that they are authentic.
Contracts: All effective mentors will sign a contract. Clear roles and responsibilities for both yourself and your mentor will be included to refer back to if your mentor is letting you down. The more security you have the better it is.
Credibility: Do they have what they say they have? Social media can be a good way to find people but also to check credibility and conduct your due diligence. Check if they have previous experience as a mentor.
Commitment: Generally, in life, it is important to be committed. Any good mentor should be as committed to you as you are to yourself. They should want the best for you. The success of the mentorship is two-fold, you’ll accelerate your growth as a mentee and the mentor will be able to benefit from a good recommendation.
(Bonus C) Community: Any good mentor should have some sort of community. This could be digitally, through Social Media, or a physical group. This community can increase your network, but it also means they are tapped into a wider pool of knowledge.
