Independence Heights, now in northwest Houston, was originally its own town — and in fact, was Texas’ first municipality registered by African Americans. Tanya Debose, a fourth-generation descendant of an Independence Heights landowner, tells us the best way to experience the history that gentrification threatens to erase.
